Evidence that Trump Wishes to Lead as Orban Did

(Orban is considered to have changed Hungary from a Democracy to an “Electoral Autocracy”

Many Americans, including myself until this week, do not have a clear grasp on how the history of Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary and his relationship with President Trump brought us closer than ever to authoritarian rule.  Orban did not abolish elections outright, but he changed the system so that power became much harder to challenge and much easier for Fidesz (his party) to keep. That is why the European Parliament said Hungary could no longer be considered a full democracy and described it as an “electoral autocracy.”

On Tuesday, April 7,2026, 5 days before the Hungarian election, Trump sent VP Vance to Hungary.  The official framing was friendship, sovereignty, and shared values; the likely real reason was to boost Orban right before the election and show that Trump’s movement stands with him.

This is significant because of the damage Orban was able to do to the once democratic government of Hungary.  Trump and Orban are on the same page, and Trump greatly admires Orban and what he has done.  You must pay attention to get the clear picture, and what is clear to me is that Trump admired and aspired to be like Orban.

Below is a chart that AI developed for me.  It is a comparison of the two leaders and their very similar political dealings.  One column describes Orban (Fidesz Party) actions, and the other Trump’s (Republican Party) actions or attempted actions.  The last column is explanatory of how close the match is.  I hope that each of you will take the time to read this chart. Please see the sources at the end of the post.

One can easily see how we are heading towards a dangerous path since Trump aspires to rule as Orban did. We can only assume this is the case, since Trump has lavished praise over Orban and his tactics.  It is obvious that Trump is making every effort to make changes that will forever change the face of our democracy.  Trump’s Republican Party shows several Orban-like authoritarian tendencies, but the United States has not been transformed to the same degree Hungary was under Orban.  We can all be grateful that Orban lost the election.
