When hope feels hard, we do not have to pretend the darkness is not real. This reflection is about following Jesus in difficult times, grieving honestly, practicing self-care, setting boundaries, and choosing to become a small piece of light when the world feels heavy.

Yesterday, January 7, 2026, a woman was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.  Her name is Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother.

Sometimes the answer is not more money in our pockets, removing people who make us uncomfortable, and who we do not wish to help, and it is certainly not bringing empire into our churches. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes we have to be around people who make us uncomfortable, sometimes we have to give our money away down to the last $50, sometimes we have to cancel plans, sometimes we have to invite others to join us.

 You can break a piece of crystal, or let a piece of silver tarnish beyond repair, but you can never lose the memories that guide and shape your life.
